Bad Walter's news: that new new 🌈
Last week!
It was a gorgeous weekend and we just barely eked by with enough ice cream to not close early! (Albeit if you came on Sunday, we were down to two flavors by the evening.) As presumed, Straight Trippin’ was a knock-out and we sold out of all the pints by Saturday. We love when a new flavor has such an epic debut.
Saturday really showed us how far we came. We did almost as much in sales as we did on opening day. But this time, we didn’t have hour-long lines because we're so much faster and more efficient now—even with less staff working. Very cool to feel the growth in real-time.
And thank you to everyone who came in to say hi to me this weekend! Working the front is so much fun but is also taxing, even if you are able-bodied. Standing on your feet, scooping hard chunky ice cream, keeping long lines and the shop organized, and doing it all with a smile is hard work! Being disabled with my health already in a more precarious place than usual, closing all weekend means I’ll be feeling the repercussions at least for the rest of the week.
But emotionally? Totally worth it. So many of you told me how much the shop, the ice cream, and my transparency means to you and it was the most heartening reminder that what we’re building here is really special. And to top it all off, when I was taking in the tables and chairs on both Saturday and Sunday night, customers helped me stack and bring everything in. It was such a beautiful gesture that I’ve imbued with love and care. I love our community. Thank you. ❤️
This week!
Our new tables have finally arrived which means more tables outside! The bistro tables and chairs we bought for opening were just not made for industrial use*. There’s a certain allure of being an entrepreneur, but it can be quite unsexy. For example—when I’m done with this Substack, I will be setting up the tables for the rest of the afternoon.
🚨 Waffle cones are back this week!!!!!🚨 We had some issues with our last waffle irons and spent the last month or two going back and forth about the warranty… anyway, now we’ve got shiny new irons. I’m so excited because our waffle cones are objectively the superior ice cream receptacle choice.
June means two things: new flavor of the month and Pride Month🏳️🌈. We’re all incredibly bummed that we didn’t think of Tinky Winky being the flavor of the month for June; people frequently called it “Twinky Winky” and it’s purple and… well, we know what will be doing next June. Instead, this month’s Flavor of the Month is Hanky Panky! Still a little risqué and delicious.
I’m excited Jack Sparrow is making its grand debut in scoops. Y’all nabbed it all up when it was in pints; that brown butter custard is just *chef’s kiss*. Julianne used a technique called dragée to candy the cacao nibs which is labor intensive, very technical, and delicious. gives the nibs this nutty essence that remind me of being a kid eating street peanuts in New York (ours has no nuts, but it is the same technique).
We’ve officially perfected our chunky roasted strawberries for Strawberry Cracker Pie. This is the best it’s ever been, right in time for summer vibes. Now that it’s better than we ever dreamed of, we’ll be doing more strawberry things in the future.
We’re doing a very small run of a new lemon-blueberry-corn cookie ice cream (currently unnamed). When Julianne asked what I thought of her cookie test batch, I told her I wasn’t sure just so I could sneak myself more cookies. But then I couldn’t hold up the ruse with a straight face and told her the truth: they were perfect. 12/10. No notes. (Pretty sure she already guessed that) The flavors transport me to private picnic on a gingham blanket, a harp playing in the background, and a glass of champagne while I wear a sundress and a straw hat. You know what I mean?
*Now I need to get rid of our old tables and chairs. They’re awesome and cute and great for a normal level of usage. Lemme know if you’re interested—they’re going cheap and I’d love them gone ASAP!
Coming up!
The Bad Walter’s team is a very queer, diverse, and accepting group of people. I hope we do a good job of exuding and extending that to you! We’ve got some fun ideas (flavor names, events, etc) to make this month feel special for our staff and customers alike.
